Juneteenth 2025: A Community Message

Dear New England College community,

Today, we join communities across the nation in observing Juneteenth, an historic day in American history commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, were finally informed of their freedom. This day marks the end of slavery in our country and stands as a powerful reminder of the enduring struggle for freedom.
Juneteenth is more than an historical milestone; it is a moment for reflection, education, and celebration. It serves as a reminder of the progress and unfinished work associated with the promise that is America. Much has been accomplished in the pursuit of liberty and justice for all. More remains to be done.

At New England College, we are committed to fostering a learning environment that values diversity, promotes a broad understanding of America’s civic history, and seeks to live up to the founders’ vision for an America based on We the People. Today, we recommit ourselves to that mission and building a community where all voices are heard and respected.

I encourage each of us to take this opportunity to learn more about the significance of Juneteenth, engage in conversations about our shared American history, and reflect on how we can contribute to serving as active and engaged citizens.

Respectfully,

Dr. Wayne F. Lesperance, Jr.
President
