The Hispanic Heritage Month theme for 2023 is “Driving Prosperity, Power, and Progress in America.”

Each year, the Hispanic Heritage Month celebration focuses of different themes, and this year’s theme focuses on prosperity, power, and progress, recognizing the significant strides of Hispanics in the economic, political, and social growth of the United States.

The celebration starts September 15 to mark the anniversary of the independence of the following five countries: Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala.

According to hispanicoutlook.com, the observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week and was expanded to a monthlong celebration in 1988.

The Office of Diversity and Inclusion promotes and values cultural celebrations that foster respect and open mindedness for other cultures. Celebrating our differences, as well as our common interests, helps unite us and educate us.

To honor and respect Hispanic cultures, we encourage everyone to join the NEC community and support our Hispanic staff, faculty, and students celebrating their important values.
