NEC Student-Athletes Gain Behind-the-Scenes Experience at Hockey East Finals

March 27, 2026

Two New England College student-athletes turned their passion for sports into a hands-on professional experience this March, working behind the scenes at one of collegiate hockey’s premier events.

Martins Leps ’27 (Ice Hockey defenseman) and Vesse Lampen ’27 (Ice Hockey forward), both enrolled in NEC’s BA in Sport and Recreation Management program, spent March 20–21 supporting operations at the 2026 Hockey East Men’s Tournament finals at TD Garden in Boston.

The opportunity came through Nate DeWolf ’22, an NEC alumnus of the same program and former hockey player, who has been involved with the Hockey East Men’s Tournament for several years. When additional support was needed for this year’s event, DeWolf connected with Associate Professor of Sport and Recreation Management Edward Royer, who recommended Leps and Lampen.

“I recommended Martins and Vesse because they are strong students in the Sport and Recreation Management program,” said Royer, “and I thought they would be excellent fits for the role given their interests and professionalism.”

For Leps and Lampen, the experience offered a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the coordination and energy of a major collegiate championship.

“We had an incredible opportunity to be part of the Hockey East Finals for two days, gaining firsthand, behind-the-scenes experience at a major collegiate hockey event,” they shared. “The tournament took place at TD Garden in Boston, making it even more special as an NHL-caliber venue.”

Highlights of the weekend included participating in the red carpet walk, escorting teams into the arena amid cheering fans, and enjoying live music. Lampen accompanied the University of Connecticut, while Leps escorted the Merrimack Warriors—an experience they described as both exciting and unforgettable.

They also observed a team meeting ahead of the championship game, gaining valuable insight into the organization, communication, and attention to detail required to execute a high-level sporting event.

“One of our dreams came true when we had the chance to skate on the ice at TD Garden,” they said. “Being on that ice, where professional players compete, was unforgettable.”

Beyond the on-ice experience, the students expanded their professional networks by connecting with industry professionals and contributing to event operations through their involvement with Pro Ambitions Hockey, assisting with camp activities and player development.

The experience culminated with a powerful moment during the championship ceremony.

“Being on the bench during the celebration allowed us to witness the players’ raw emotions—excitement, pride, and accomplishment—up close,” they said. “It was a powerful reminder of what makes sports so special.”

Reflecting on the opportunity, Leps and Lampen emphasized both its professional and personal impact.

“Overall, this experience was both exciting and educational. It strengthened our network, deepened our understanding of event operations, and confirmed that this is the field we want to pursue. We are especially grateful to New England College, and particularly Professor Edward Royer, for connecting us with Hockey East management and making this opportunity possible.”

Experiences like this highlight NEC’s commitment to connecting classroom learning with real-world opportunities—preparing students to succeed in the dynamic and competitive field of sport and recreation management.
