Expanded offerings strengthen NEC’s commitment to developing New Hampshire’s next generation of school leaders.

New England College (NEC) has received official approval from the New Hampshire Department of Education for its Principal Licensure Only and School Superintendent Licensure Only programs, marking a significant milestone in the College’s efforts to support and advance educational leadership across the state.

Building on its longstanding commitment to educator preparation, NEC’s newly approved programs provide clear, accessible pathways for experienced educators seeking to step into leadership roles at both the local and district levels. Designed with working professionals in mind, the programs combine rigorous academic coursework with practical, field-based experiences aligned to the evolving demands of school leadership—all while being efficient and cost effective.

“This approval represents an important step forward for New England College and for educators across New Hampshire,” said Dr. Patricia Corbett, Vice President of Academic Affairs at NEC. “Our goal is to prepare leaders who are not only highly qualified but also equipped to navigate the complexities of today’s educational landscape with vision, integrity, and a deep commitment to student success.”

The Principal Licensure Only program, developed in collaboration with the New Hampshire Association of School Principals (NHASP), emphasizes real-world application, mentorship from experienced administrators, and a focus on key areas such as instructional leadership, school culture, and community engagement. The addition of state approval now enables graduates to pursue licensure with confidence, knowing the program meets all New Hampshire Department of Education standards.

Complementing this offering, NEC’s School Superintendent Licensure Only program prepares experienced administrators for district-level leadership. The program focuses on strategic planning, organizational leadership, school finance, policy, and effective governance—equipping candidates with the skills needed to lead complex educational systems and drive meaningful, system-wide improvement.

“The New England College Superintendent and Principal Licensure Only programs are designed for candidates to experience their learning in school settings. Grounded in the research on effective leadership development, the programs were intentionally structured to move beyond traditional, theory-dominant models,” explained Dr. Michael Delahanty—Lecturer, Graduate Education—at NEC. “The programs center on sustained, job-embedded clinical experiences, reflective practice, and problem-based learning. Such features are identified consistently in the literature as essential to preparing impactful school leaders. By situating candidates in authentic leadership contexts and aligning experiences to professional standards, this model represents a fundamentally different, and more effective, approach to leadership preparation in New Hampshire.”

Both programs are structured to provide flexibility for working professionals, with coursework delivered by accomplished faculty and practitioners who bring extensive experience in K–12 education. Through a combination of academic study, hands-on learning, and professional mentorship, participants develop the knowledge and skills necessary to lead effectively in diverse educational settings.

With state approval now secured, NEC is actively enrolling candidates for upcoming cohorts. Educators interested in advancing their careers and making a broader impact within their schools and communities are encouraged to learn more at www.nec.edu.
