Standing Together in Times of Challenge: A Community Message

Dear NEC Community,
On this September 11, we pause to honor the lives lost in 2001, the families who still grieve, and the first responders and service members whose courage continues to inspire us. Reflection and service remain a core part of who we are as a community.
In recent days, our country and world have faced difficult news. The death of Charlie Kirk, the shooting at Evergreen High School in Colorado, and the loss of Iryna Zarutska have touched many. These events remind us of loss, of the value of life, and of our shared responsibility to one another.
As we learned from 9/11, in moments like these our strongest response is to come together in unity. These moments also remind us why free expression must be paired with respect, care, and personal responsibility. At NEC, we protect the freedom to speak, question, and disagree. We also expect civility, safety, and support for every person on our campus.
If you are struggling, please reach out. Our Counseling Services, Campus Safety, Student Affairs, and faculty and staff are here to help. Support one another, check in with your peers, and please let us know when you need assistance.
Thank you for the way you live our values, together, each day. Unity is our greatest strength, grounded in compassion, guided by clarity, and upheld with resolve.
Respectfully,
Dr. Wayne F. Lesperance, Jr.
