A COMMUNITY OF WRITERS

They are writers, editors and publishers; poets, playwrights, and novelists. They have received numerous awards and grants, given readings and workshops, and their work can be found in books, journals, chapbooks, newspapers, magazines, and on the world wide web. They are the faculty, staff, students, and alumni of New England College. The variety of their projects is endless, and their collective energy has created a vibrant community at NEC – a community of writers. As Maura MacNeil, Professor of Writing, describes it, “When I think about the ways to define what we do, I think of the collaborative nature of our work and how that allows for intellectual and professional growth. That leads to the sharing of ideas and builds community.”

This community of writers at NEC benefits not only current students, but offers something for just about every age group and geographic location. Celebrating their 35th year, The Friends of the New England College Library host an annual Art and Essay Conference that encourages elementary and middle school students in the vicinity of Henniker to express themselves in writing and art. Organized by longtime community member, Anne Sayce, the program has drawn nationally recognized authors and illustrators to inspire the region’s young people. Recent keynote speakers have included author, veteran storyteller and television personality Fritz Wetherbee, and award winning children’s author Tomie DePaola.

Kevin Harvey is fond of quoting nineteenth-century American philosopher William James’ admonition to, “love your subject and respect your students.” In just a few words, that describes the driving force behind Harvey’s teaching philosophy at New England College. The recipient of the 2007 Robert A. Kilgore Faculty Award, Kevin Harvey has spent more than twenty years in NEC’s classrooms.
