English Dept.At New England College, the study of English is the starting point for an exciting journey where the worlds of literature, history, arts, and culture intersect. In the context of Anglo-American and European literature, students will have an opportunity to explore mythology, criticism, aesthetics, genres, modernism and post-modernism. Throughout the program, a variety of voices are represented including those of women, ethnic, racial, and postcolonial cultures.

Our literature and creative writing program challenges our students to read, think, and write both critically and imaginatively and prepares them for a future that demands good communication, creative thinking, and an enriched cultural background.

Students may choose to major or minor in English, creative writing, and comparative literature or to major in secondary education-English.

Kevin Harvey
The recipient of the 2007 Robert A. Kilgore Faculty Award, Kevin Harvey has spent more than twenty years in NEC’s classrooms. With a characteristic quip, Harvey says, “I’ve always had the belief that awards are good at the beginning and end of one’s career.” Far from being close to ceding his role as a professor of English, Harvey notes, “You reach a point where you don’t think you can get better at what you do. I’d like to think that I received the award because I got better and people noticed.”
