Requirements to Major in History

A. Collegium Requirements

  • VER 1000 - History of Political Thought 
  • VER 4000 - Research Methods 

B. History Core Requirements

  • HS 1110 (GCD 1070) - Western Civilization to 1500; and
    HS 1120 (GCD 1080) - Western Civilization since 1500
    or
  • HS 1130 - Survey of American History to 1877; and
    HS 1140 - Survey of American History Since 1877

AND

·         HS 2420 (PO 2420) - World Geography

·         HS 2970 – Historiography

·         HS 2980 - Introduction to Historical Methods 

American Concentration

  • Three additional courses in American History
  • One course in European History 3000
  • Three elective courses in History
  • One Directed/ Independent Study 
  • HS 4950 - Senior Thesis

European Concentration

  • Three additional courses in European History
  • One course in American History
  • Three elective courses numbered in History
  • One Directed/ Independent Study 
  • HS 4950 - Senior Thesis (3 credits)

Note: HS 3990 may, with permission, be used to satisfy requirements above the 2000 level.

C. Foreign Language Requirement

History majors must demonstrate reading proficiency in one foreign language, either through a test process approved by the department or through 6 credit hours (in one language) of instruction at the college level.  English may be considered as a foreign language for students whose first language is not English.

D. Distribution Courses and Electives

Requirements to Minor in History

  • HS 1110 (GCD 1070) - Western Civilization to 1500; and
    HS 1120 (GCD 1080) - Western Civilization since 1500
    or
  • HS 1130 - Survey of American History to 1877; and
    HS 1140 - Survey of American History Since 1877

AND

·         HS 2420 (PO 2420) - World Geography

·         HS 2980 - Introduction to Historical Methods

·         Two elective courses in History, at the 3000-level or higher
