Professional Writing
New England College

As part of our institutional commitment to the discipline of Writing, New England College is committed to offering additional opportunities for students to develop their writing and creative and critical thinking skills. NEC’s aim to prepare our students for the fluency of language use they will find necessary within the professions has resulted in the creation of two Professional Writing programs.

Currently we offer both a Professional Writing minor, as well as an Master of Arts in Professional Writing program. Within these programs students take courses in which they demonstrate individual responsibility for the production of written work, recognize the parameters of intellectual property, and invest themselves in the seriousness of their writing endeavors.  These programs allow students to improve their understanding of the theoretical, disciplinary, interdisciplinary and professional aspects of writing and help them to develop the style, voice, vocabulary, and syntax appropriate and necessary for the practice of composition in diverse fields.

During his introduction of Professor Mark Mitch, 2009 recipient of the Robert A. Kilgore Faculty of the Year Award, Dr. Don Melander described a person with a seamless connection between his teaching and his life. The award was presented to Professor Mitch at the College’s May Commencement, not only for his exemplary teaching but for his ability to integrate his innovative work in sustainability with the mission of the College and the curriculum of his classes.
