Sociology
New England College

Sociology Dept. The broadest of the social sciences, the study of sociology encompasses every facet of human social experience. At New England College, our Bachelor in Sociology curriculum focuses on themes of social change and social justice.

Faculty are deeply committed to participatory learning in applied settings. Students pursuing a degree in sociology engage in field trips, travel, community service, and action projects. A wide range of internships are available in nonprofit community organizations.

This Bachelor in the social sciences field is designed to inform students on a broad range of social issues and to provide them with the analytical and practical skills needed to seek careers in the fields of human services and social change, or to pursue programs in graduate study.

Sara Crane- Trip to NicaraguaIt’s hard to pick one aspect of my academic career at NEC that sticks out the most. I have traveled to Nicaragua to work with a women’s non-profit organization; I’ve facilitated writing workshops at the NH women’s prison; I’ve volunteered at the NH Civil Liberties Union; I work with adults with developmental disabilities.
Needless to say, the opportunities at NEC are plentiful. But there are social problems everywhere begging for student volunteers. What makes NEC unique are the teachers who help you navigate through these opportunities.

The small size of the Sociology department lends itself to building strong relationships between professor and student—this is what I have valued most during my academic career.

Coming into college, I was not an overly confident person. While I studied hard and received good grades, I sat in the back of the classroom and did not speak up. But then Sociology Professor Chris Dale approached me with the possibility of traveling to Nicaragua as part of a May-term course. Boy in NicaraguaThrough the course of planning the trip, and actually going to Nicaragua I found my voice as a student.
I was a Communications major and had never imagined a career in Sociology. But I became caught up in the passion with which Dale had for sociology, and it only took a little prodding before I was convinced I belonged in the field too.  I credit this professor with single-handedly giving me the tools and confidence necessary to transform myself and my world.

Regardless of where you go to school you will see social problems that need fixing. But no one will be better able to illustrate the intricacies of sociology so that you may be the one to fix those problems than the professors at NEC.
