Baseball drops double-header to conference power

The Roger Williams University Hawks outscored New England College a combined 19-1 beating the Pilgrims two games Sunday afternoon in Henniker. The two wins improve the Hawks to 26-9 overall and 18-2 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference. The two losses drop the Pilgrims to 6-22 overall and 2-16 in the conference.


 

In game one the two teams would battle through a scoreless opening two innings before Roger Williams would grab a run as Tony Verrochi (Norwood, Mass.) would be hit by a pitch and come around to score on a ground ball.  The Hawks would break the game open in the top half of the fifth as they would score four runs, including a two-run homerun by Kevin Simpson (Londonderry, N.H.) and head into the bottom of the fifth up 5-0.  NEC would muster a run in the home half of the fifth as P.J. Crowley would single home Kevin Bray who singled to start off the inning.  Roger Williams would hold the Pilgrims scoreless in both the sixth and seventh innings and tack on four runs in the final inning to cruise to the 9-1 victory.

 

Leading the way for Roger Williams was Jamie Dahill (South Boston, Mass.) who finished with two hits, two runs batted in and a run scored.  RWU’s Grant Bolin (Simsbury, Conn.) singled twice and Kevin Simpson finished with three runs batted in for the Hawks.  Picking up the complete game win on the mound for Roger Williams was Dan Roberge (Oakdale, Conn.) who allowed one earned run on five hits and struck out five.

 

In game two the Hawks would open the first inning with three singles as Bill Lambert (Hanover, Mass.) would come around to score putting Roger Williams up 1-0 early.  Neither team would score over the next three innings but the Hawks would explode for three runs in the fifth, two in the sixth and tack on four in the seventh coasting to the 10-0 win.

 

Leading the way for Roger Williams was Tony Verrochi who finished with two hits including a double and a run scored.  Nine other Hawk batters singled including Grant Bolin and Billy Dunn (Fiskdale, Mass.) who finished with two runs scored.  Picking up the win on the mound for Roger Williams was Alex Perry (Glastonbury, Conn.) who pitched four innings allowing no earned runs on two hits and striking out eight.

 

Leading the way for NEC was P.J. Crowley, Scott Miller (Hillsborough, N.H.) and Matt Leger (Concord, N.H.) who each singled for the Pilgrims.
