Hawks hold off Pilgrim surge
Roger Williams University’s Kasey Beckwith (Franklin, Conn.) exploded for five goals and an assist leading the Hawks past the New England College Pilgrims 10-8 Wednesday evening in Keene. With the win the Hawks improve to 4-1 overall and grab their second conference victory of the season improving to 2-0 in the TCCC. The loss drops the Pilgrims to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
The Hawks wouldn’t waste much time as Kate Malenczak (Ayville, N.Y.) would give Roger Williams the early lead scoring just 1:30 into the opening half. NEC’s Jodie Dresser (Keene, N.H.) would knot the game at 1-1 minutes later converting on a free-position shot at the 22:58 mark. Roger Williams would respond with three straight goals, including two by Beckwith, to build a 4-1 lead with just over six minutes remaining in the half. The two teams would exchange goals in the final 1:30 of the half as NEC’s Dresser would record her second goal of the evening and Beckwith would connect again for Roger Williams, sending the Hawks into halftime with the 5-2 advantage.
The Pilgrim offense would come out on fire in the second half of play scoring three goals in the opening 1:35 tying the game at 5-5. The Hawks would regain their composure netting the next four goals of the half and holding the Pilgrims offense to just two late goals to capture the 10-8 victory.
Roger Williams’ Jackie Criss (Westwood, Mass.) dished out six assists on the evening, while Kate Malenczak and Claire Halliday (Trenton, N.J.) each netted two goals for the Hawks.
Leading the way for NEC was Emily Tanguay (Manchester, N.H.) who scored two goals and had an assist. NEC’s Jodie Dresser and Brandi Vittum (Reading, Vt.) each finished with two goals for the Pilgrims.
Picking up the win in goal for Roger Williams was Amanda Magee (Columbus, N.J.) who finished with 20 saves. In goal for NEC was Alexandra DiRico (Limerick, Pa.) who stopped 12 shots on the evening.
