Hutton leads Pilgrims to first conference win
New England College’s Ashley Hutton (Lebanon, N.H.) finished with a game-high 28 points leading the Pilgrims past the visiting Curry College Colonels 90-73 Wednesday evening. The win improves the Pilgrims to 7-12 overall and 1-7 in conference play. The loss drops the Colonels to 6-14 overall and 2-6 in the conference.
The two teams would battle closely through the opening seven minutes of play before the Pilgrims would use a 7-0 run to jump ahead 29-13 with 8:58 remaining in the half. Curry would use back-to-back jumpers from Christina Sancinito (Wakefield, Mass.) and Libby Flannigan (Topsham, Vt.) cutting the NEC lead down to nine with just four minutes left in the half. That is as close as the Colonels would get as the Pilgrims would close out the half on a 12-6 run and head into halftime up 43-28.
The Pilgrims would continue their hot shooting in the second half as NEC would shoot an impressive 54% from the field, building their lead to 26 just seven minutes in. The Colonels would try to battle back shooting 50% from the field in the second half but the NEC offense would keep pace capturing the 90-73 victory.
NEC’s LaShawnda Wilson (Burlington, Vt.) finished one assist away from a triple-double scoring 13 points, grabbing 13 rebounds and dishing out nine assists on the night. NEC’s Kendall Wolfson (Lyndeborough, N.H.) recorded a double-double finishing with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Katie Plankey (Columbia, Conn.) chipped in 13 points for the Pilgrims.
Leading the way for Curry was Jennifer Olejnik (Salem, Mass.) who finished with a team-high 16 points. Curry’s Christina Sancinito scored 12 points and Emma Dickson (N. Yarmouth, Maine) chipped in 11 points for the Colonels.
