New England College’s Eric Lenahan (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.) score a career-high 18 points to lead the Pilgrims past the visiting SUNY Cobleskill Tigers 64-61 Tuesday night. With the win the Pilgrims improve to 2-7 overall, while the loss drops the Tigers to 0-6 on the season.

The two teams would battle back-and-forth through an opening half that saw seven ties and seven lead changes.  Neither team would come out shooing well early as the two teams combined for just 18 points in the opening eight minutes of the game.  NEC would hold the one point lead with just under a minute remaining in the first but Cobleskill’s Will Johnson (Gilboa, N.Y.) would hit a lay-up with just over 30 seconds remaining giving the Tigers the 31-30 halftime lead.

The second half would be much of the same as the two teams headed into the final five minutes of the game tied at 54-54. The Pilgrims would use a 5-0 run going up 61-56 with just under two minutes remaining in regulation.  Cobleskill would battle back getting within four with just over a minute left but the Pilgrims would hold off the late Tiger surge capturing the 64-61 victory.

In addition to Lenahan, the Pilgrims were led by Jamie Davies (Plymouth, England) who finished with 12 points.  NEC’s Eric Eklund (W. Harrison, N.Y.) scored 11 points and Shane Hennessey (Plymouth, England) chipped in eight points and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.

Leading the way for the Tigers was Taiquan Newkirk (Brooklyn, N.Y.) who finished with a double-double with a team-high 12 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.  Cobleskill’s Kevin Mitchell (Lake Luzerne, N.Y.) chipped in 13 points and Corey Lewis (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) finished with 11 points for the Tigers.
