Men's Lacrosse pulls away from USM
New England College men’s lacrosse would score eight unanswered second half goals beating the University of Southern Maine Huskies 11-3 Monday evening in Portland. With the win the Pilgrims improve to 3-8 on the season, while the loss drops the Huskies to 2-9 overall.
The Pilgrims would jump out to an early lead scoring the only three goals of the first quarter, including two goals by Cory Love (Rochester, N.Y.) putting NEC up 3-0 heading into the second. USM would respond in the second quarter of play holding the Pilgrims scoreless and netting three goals of their own sending the game into halftime tied 3-3.
NEC’s Carlos Gutierrez (Guaynabo, P.R.) would snap the tie early in the third quarter scoring at the 12:38 mark. The Pilgrims would go on to score three addition goals in the third quarter heading into the fourth with the 7-3 lead. The Pilgrims would continue to control much of the offense in the fourth as they would tack on four unanswered goals and to the 11-3 victory.
Leading the way for NEC was Carlos Gutierrez and Cory Love who each finished with three goals. NEC’s Colin Gordon (Manchester, Mass.) and Pat Mellilo (Wallingford, Conn.) each chipped in two goals, while Dillon Lantz (Woodstock, Vt.) scored a goal and dished out two assists for the Pilgrims.
Picking up the win in net for the Pilgrims was Nick Fischer (S. Burlington, Vt.) who finished with six saves.
