Men's Soccer falls in TCCC Quarterfinal
Salve Regina midfielder Max Starace (Fort Lee, N.J.) would head in the lone goal of the match in the 52nd minute lifting the visiting Seahawks past the New England College Pilgrims in TCCC Men’s Soccer Quarterfinal action Saturday afternoon. With the win the Seahawks improve to 10-7-2 on the season and advance to the TCCC Semifinals. With the loss the Pilgrims move to 10-6-3 and await a possible bid to the ECAC New England Tournament.
The two teams would battle back-and-forth throughout the first half of play as each team would record three shots on net but neither would be able to muster a goal sending the game into halftime knotted at 0-0.
The Seahawk offense would turn up the heat early in the second half as Salve Regina would have several opportunities including a shot by Sean McAllister (N. Arlington, N.J.) which was kicked away by NEC defender Ian Coorssen (E. Kingstown, R.I.) in the 52nd minute. Salve Regina would then take advantage on the ensuing corner kick as Starce would head in a nice serve from Alex Clark (Ridgefield, Conn.) putting the Seahawks up 1-0 with 37 minutes remaining in regulation.
The Pilgrims would have a late scoring opportunity in the final minutes but Dean Smith’s (Schewenksville, Pa.) shot traveled just wide of the post as the Seahawks would hold on for the 1-0 victory.
Picking up the shutout win in goal for Salve Regina was Kurt Ginthwain (Tolland, Conn.) who finished the afternoon with four saves. In net for NEC was Jon Mayo (Merrimack, N.H.) who finished with fives saves.
Salve Regina will travel to take on the #1 seeded Western New England College Golden Bears in TCCC Semifinal action on Wednesday, Nov. 5 at 1:00 p.m.
