Pilgrims drop double-header to Leopards
New England College softball dropped their first two conference games of the season as they were swept by the Wentworth Institute of Technology Leopards Tuesday afternoon in Boston. With the two losses the Pilgrims even their overall record to 6-6 and fall to 0-2 in the conference, while the wins improve the Leopards to 5-9 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
In game one the Leopards would plate runs in each of the six innings, including a four run third and a three run fifth, leading them to the 14-6 victory. The Pilgrims would pound out 13 hits and score three runs in the second and two in the third but the offense would not be enough as the Leopards would record 14 hits of their own.
Leading the way at the plate for the Pilgrims was Kristen Purdy (Candia, N.H.) and Alexandria Sacco (Tewksbury, Mass.) who were each 3-for-4 at the plate and each recorded a double and a run batted in. NEC’s Rachel White (Arlington, Mass.) finished with two hits and two runs scored and Mary Roux (Auburn, Mass.) singled twice for the Pilgrims.
On the mound for NEC was Purdy who allowed six earned runs on eight hits in three plus innings of work.
In game two the Leopards exploded for 11 runs in the bottom half of the first inning beating the Pilgrims 16-3. Leading the way for NEC was Alexandria Sacco and Stephanie Freitag (Lakeville, Mass.) who each singled twice. Kristen Purdy, Deanna Brayton (Queensbury, N.Y.) and Sierra Thibeault (Brunswick, Maine) each singled and scored a run for the Pilgrims.
