Pilgrims fall to in-state rival Keene State
New England College softball battled in-state opponent Keene State College Friday afternoon falling in two close games, losing game one 2-6 and dropping game two just 4-6. With the two losses the Pilgrims fall to 8-18 on the season, while the wins improve the Owls to 11-10-1 overall.
In game on the Owls would jump out to the early lead plating three runs on four hits in the bottom half of the first inning. The Pilgrims would score their first run of the afternoon in the third as Alexandria Sacco would lead off the inning with a double and come around to score on a Chelsea Torrico single.
Keene would get the run back in the home half of the third but NEC’s Mary Roux would crank a solo homerun in the fourth cutting the Owl lead to 4-2. Keene would score single runs in both the fourth and sixth innings and hold NEC to just two base runners in the final three innings eventually capturing the 6-2 victory.
Leading the way for the Pilgrims was Torrico who was 3-for-4 at the plate, while Deanna Brayton and Alexandria Sacco each finished with two hits.
In game two NEC would start the scoring exploding for four runs on four hits in the first inning. Keene would get a run back in the third inning and go on to record seven hits and plate five runs in the home half of the sixth to go up 6-4.
Leading the way for the Pilgrims in game two was Stephanie Freitag who singled twice. NEC’s Deanna Brayton and Kristen Purdy each singled in a run for the Pilgrims.
