Sacco leads NEC Women's Soccer to victory
New England College’s Alexandria Sacco (Tewksbury, Mass.) netted two second half goals lifting the Pilgrims past the visiting Eastern Nazarene Crusaders 3-1 Saturday afternoon. With the win the Pilgrims improve to 4-5-0 overall and 3-2-0 in conference play. The loss drops the Crusaders to 2-9-0 overall and 0-6-0 in conference action.
The Pilgrims wouldn’t waste much time as senior forward Debbie Lyons (Wilmington, Mass.) would net her team-high fifth goal of the season on a breakaway just 55 seconds into the opening half. The Crusaders would tie the game as Brenna Mereness (Castleton, N.Y.) would score her sixth goal of the season unassisted at the 22:38 mark. The two teams would battle through the remaining minutes of the opening half scoreless as the Crusaders would hold the edge in shots out shooting the Pilgrims 9-4.
NEC’s Alexandria Sacco would break the tie at the 66:42 mark scoring off a pass from senior Deanna Brayton (Queensbury, N.Y.) putting the Pilgrims up 2-0. Sacco would strike again giving the Pilgrims some breathing room as she would score of a nice pass from Lyons with just under three minutes remaining in the game.
Picking up the win in net for NEC was Kerry Hughes (Wallkill, N.Y.) who finished the game with six saves. In net for Eastern Nazarene was Joy Leaser (Encinitas, Calif.) who finished the afternoon with seven saves.
The Pilgrims return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 7 when they host conference opponent Anna Maria College at 3:30 p.m. Eastern Nazarene will host conference opponent Curry College on Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 4:30 p.m.
