New England College women’s basketball opened their 2008-09 campaign with two huge victories this weekend at the Regis College Classic in Weston, Mass. On Saturday afternoon the Pilgrims defeated Framingham State 80-71 in overtime and on Sunday NEC sailed past Mt. Ida College 75-60.

In Saturday’s win over Framingham State LaShawnda Wilson’s (Burlington, Vt.) buzzer-beating lay-up forced overtime, as the Pilgrims offense would pull away in the extra stanza topping the Rams 80-71.

Leading the offensive attack for the Pilgrims was Wilson who scored a career-high 22 points and also grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds and dished out seven assists.  Senior guard Ashley Hutton (Lebanon, N.H.) led the Pilgrims in scoring finishing with 25 points and first-year forward Kelsie Moses (Queensbury, N.Y.) finished with 12 points in her college debut.

On Sunday the Pilgrims offense controlled much of the game as NEC led Mt. Ida 47-24 at halftime and sailed to the 75-60 victory.  The Pilgrims shot an impressive 43% from the field as a team, including 50% in the first half.

The senior tandem of Wilson and Hutton led the way again each recording a double-double.  Wilson finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Hutton finished with a game-high 23 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.  First-year guard Hallie Price (S. Beach, Ore.) chipped in 11 points for the Pilgrims.
