Education Philosophy:
Public school education is one of the most important endeavors that our society supports. Our democratic society is dependent on the quality of its citizens and public educators are charged with helping our young people become positive citizens. The teacher education programs, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels, at New England College have the honor of assisting our students in their educational journeys. Students at every level need to be nurtured and supported emotionally and academically. We work from the assumption that students will learn if they work in schools that care about them personally and academically. Schools depend on the quality of relationships to be successful: relationships among student, teachers, staff, and parents. When relationships in school are not positive students and teachers struggle, so it is critical that teachers create classrooms in which students and teachers maintain strong positive relationships. Students naturally need to learn important concepts and skills, so the second aspect of a great education is great lessons. Teachers need to develop curriculum, assessments, and instructional strategies that help every student learn well. This entails learning about student strengths and weakness, interests, and learning styles in order to differentiate appropriately for the real students in our real classes.
