Men's Ice Hockey Wins Overtime Thriller Against St. Michael's
HENNIKER, N.H.—New England College sophomore Jacob Andersson (Mjolby, Sweden) would net the game-winner 2:41 into overtime lifting the Pilgrims past the visiting St. Michael's College Purple Knights 4-3 Friday evening.
With the win the Pilgrims extend their winning streak to four games improving to 4-1-1 overall and 3-1-1 in ECAC East play. The loss drops the Purple Knights to 1-4-0 overall and 1-3-0 in ECAC East action.
The Pilgrims would notch the first goal of the game just 23 seconds after the puck dropped as Johan Qvarfordt (Sodertalje, Sweden) collected a pass on the left wing from Jacob Andersson and one-touched it past Saint Michael's goaltender Mike Dizgun (Montreal, Quebec).
The Purple Knights would gather the equalizer in the 14th minute of the opening period as AJ Pieprzak (Barrie, Ontario) would score assisted by John Teulings (Hamden, Conn.) and William Cote (Quebec City, Quebec).
Saint Michael's would take the 2-1 lead in the second period as the Pilgrims turned the puck over on their own blue line. Kevin Altador (Montreal, Quebec) stole the puck off the turnover and squared up for the slap shot in just outside the right hashmarks.
NEC would even the score at 2-2 at the 9:53 mark of the third period on the power play. The Pilgrims worked the puck into the crease where it bounced around until Ben Maclaughlin (Beverly, Mass.) finally poked the puck into the net. Four minutes later, NEC would get a score from Jacob Andersson (Mjolby, Sweden) as he would put in a goal assisted by Johan Qvardfordt (Sodertalje, Sweden) and Samuli Turunen (Joensuu, Finland.)
Five seconds after NEC survived a Saint Michael's power play opportunity, they would force the 3-3 tie as Dan Evarts (Hinesburg, Vt.) shot wide and found the skate of Josh Geary (Wellesley, Mass.), who directed the puck into the goal and forced overtime.
The Pilgrims would come out on top in overtime as Andersson fired a shot that was redirected by a Purple Knight defender tallying the game-winning goal.
The Pilgrims finished the game out shooting the Purple Knights 20-14.
Picking up the win in net for NEC was Shawn Sirman (Blezard Valley, Ontario) who recorded 11 saves. Dizgun finished the evening with 16 saves in net for St. Michael's College.
NEC returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 17 when they host ECAC East foe Norwich University. St. Michael's will travel to take on St. Anselm College on Saturday, Nov. 17.
