NEC Men’s Ice Hockey Beats Visiting University of Southern Maine

HENNIKER, N.H.—New England College men’s ice hockey would net three unanswered goals en route to the 4-1 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies Saturday evening.

With the win the Pilgrims improve to 9-12-4 overall and 7-8-3 in ECAC East play.  The loss ends the Huskies’ season at 7-18-0 overall and 4-14-0 in conference play.

Neither team would muster a score in the opening period of play as the Huskies would hold the 10-4 advantage in shots. Southern Maine would have the best scoring opportunity in the first as Ryan Seward (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) would fire a shot that would ricochet off the post at the midway point in the half.

Southern Maine would break the scoring drought 11 minutes into the second period of play as Alex Pompeo (Hingham, Mass.) would come through with eighth goal of the season assisted by Brad McGovern (Haverhill, Mass.).

NEC would get the equalizer at the 16:29 as Sam Turunen (Joensuu, Finland) would poke in a shot off the stick of Patrick Corcoran (Philadelphia, Pa.) that would deflect off a Huskie defender.  The Pilgrims would then take the 2-1 with just over a minute to play in the half as Ben Souders (Downington, Pa.) would rebound in a Jonathan Boxill (Bracknell, England) shot.

NEC’s Ben Maclaughlin (Beverly, Mass.) would give the Pilgrims some breathing room at the 10:38 mark in the third period as he would net his fifth goal of the season assisted by Garrett Brazzier (Mississauga, Ontario).  The Pilgrims would tack on an empty-netter off the stick of James O’Reilly (Charleston, S. C.) in the final minute of play en route to the 4-1 victory.

Southern Maine finished the game out shooting the Pilgrims 37-23.
Picking up the win in net for NEC was Shawn Sirman (Blezard Valley, Ontario) who finished the game with an impressive 26 saves.  In net for Southern Maine was Josh Hillegas (Middleton, Wisc.) who tallied 19 saves,

NEC will await their post season seeding but will be on the road Saturday, Feb. 23, opponent and time is yet to be determined.
