NEC Women’s Basketball Sails Past Visiting Green Mountain College
HENNIKER, N.H. – New England College women’s basketball forward Taylor Burgess (Randallstown, Md.) would finish with a game-high 18 points and 10 rebounds leading the Pilgrims past the visiting Green Mountain College Eagles 73-39 Saturday afternoon.
With the win the Pilgrims improve to 12-3 overall and 7-1 in NAC play. The loss drops the Eagles to 3-9 on the season and 1-6 in NAC play.
The Pilgrims would shoot an impressive 48% from the field in the opening half of the game and never trail recording the final five points of the half to head into halftime up 37-20. Green Mountain’s Maria Lafond (Schenectady, N.Y.) and Jacque Caster (Seneca Falls, N.Y.) combined for 16 of the 20 first half Eagle points.
The Pilgrims would continue to control both end of the court in the second half of play holding the Eagles to just 19 points, while dropping in 36 en route to the 73-39 victory.
In addition to Burgess the Pilgrims were led by Markey Flewelling (Portsmouth, N.H.) who chipped in 10 points and Kayla Lawlor (Cocoa Beach, Fla.) and Stephanie Parker (Wilder, Vt.) who each chipped in nine points for the Pilgrims. NEC’s Shauntaye Pumphret (Bristol, N.H.) led all rebounders with 11.
Leading the way for Green Mountain was Jacque Caster who finished with a team-high 13 points. Green Mountain’s Chelsea Paul (Northville, N.Y.) who chipped in nine points to go along with a team-high seven rebounds, while Maria Lafond finished with seven points.
NEC returns to action Saturday, Jan. 19 when they host in-state NAC rival Colby-Sawyer College. Green Mountain will hit the court on Thursday, Jan. 17 when they host NAC foe Lyndon State College.
