Newbury Men's Basketball Tops New England College
HENNIKER, N.H. – Newbury College men’s basketball would trail at halftime but outscore New England College 51-37 in the second half en route to the 72-60 victory Tuesday.
With the win the Nighthawks improve to 2-2 overall, while the loss drops the Pilgrims to 0-4 overall.
The Nighthawks would hold the lead for the majority of the opening half before the Pilgrims would close out the half on a 7-0 run grabbing their first lead since the early minutes of play to head into halftime up 23-21.
Newbury would regain the lead just over a minute into the second half and never trail, building their lead to as many as 15 midway through the second. NEC would cut the lead to six with just over five minutes remaining in regulation but Newbury would go 6-for-7 from the foul line in the final 1:30 solidifying the 72-60 victory.
Four different players scored in double-figures for Newbury, including Peterson Bernard (Boston, Mass.) who led all scorers with 22 points and pulled down an impressive game-high 22 rebounds. Newbury’s Kwame Thompson (Brockton, Mass.) chipped in 19 points, while Eric Watson (New Rochelle, N.Y.) finished with a double-double scoring 11 points and pulling down 13 rebounds.
Leading the way for NEC was Abdirahman Mohamed (Biddeford, Maine) who finished with team-high 14 points. NEC’s Jaskin Melendez (Bronx, N.Y.) finished with 12 points and Javon Williams (New Britain, Conn.) chipped in eight points and finished with a team-high eight rebounds.
NEC returns to action on Thursday, Nov. 29 when they open up North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play on the road taking on Johnson State College. Newbury will hit the court on Thursday, Nov. 29 when they travel to take on non-conference opponent Babson College.
