The NEC Open Door Theatre Presents: The Winter’s Tale by William Shakespeare

Michael Tucker as Leontes, Alex Picard as Hermione and Dominique Grant as Perdita.

“It is required you do awake your faith…”

A tyrannous king, star-crossed lovers, a banished child, a loyal servant, a clever thief… The Open Door Theatre celebrates its 9th summer with all of these and more in Shakespeare’s classic tale of jealousy, loss, love, and reconciliation. Brilliantly juggling drama, comedy, romance, and suspense, The Winter’s Tale is filled with twists and turns, laughs, surprises, and fascinating characters. All this, and Shakespeare’s glorious poetry as well.

Shakespeare’s magnificent late play is a roller-coaster ride from romance to tragedy to comedy and finally to a place of transcendent beauty that few other works of art have ever gone.  “A sad tale’s best for winter,” says Hermione’s young son - but after unleashing a wintry tempest onto his characters, Shakespeare ultimately conjures spring’s miraculous rebirth.

Directed by NEC Professor Glenn Stuart, this production is The Open Door’s most ambitious undertaking yet.  The company is comprised of faculty, staff, alumni, and associates of New England College Theatre. Returning from previous seasons are Michael Tucker, Alex Picard, Russ Rattray, Jamie Gray, Rachel Buck, Ian Allan, Greg Stuart, and Kevin Guimond.

The Open Door welcomes five new members: Fred Robbins ’76; Dani Duggan; Ryan Flaherty (son of NEC alums Chris and Carrie Flaherty); and two members of the class of 2012, Dominique Grant and Adam Boisselle. An original musical score is being composed by Open Door Theatre veterans Jimmy Hawkes III and Keri Bresaw.

This tragi-comic romance is possibly Shakespeare’s most emotionally complex and breathtakingly theatrical play. Be sure not to miss it.

Performances will be held in the Mainstage Theatre in the Science Building on September 7 and 8at 7:30 p.m., and September 9 at 3:00 p.m. Tickets are $10.00 for members of the NEC community and seniors, and $12.00 for the general public.
