Pathways ESOL Program: Improve Your English. Earn College Credit. Start Your Future.
Build the English skills you need for college success—while earning degree credits.
The New England College Pathways Program is designed for international students who are ready to pursue a U.S. college education but need additional support in English before taking on a full academic course load.
This flexible program combines intensive English language development with college-level coursework, allowing students to strengthen their academic English while making meaningful progress toward their degree.
Whether you are developing foundational English skills or are already approaching college-level proficiency, your Pathways experience is tailored to your current ability, academic goals, and individual needs.
English Support Designed Around You
Every student enters the Pathways Program at the level that best matches their English proficiency. An approved English proficiency test helps determine the appropriate starting point, so you can receive the right level of support without spending unnecessary time in courses you have already mastered.
As your English develops, you can progress through the program and transition into increasingly advanced college coursework.
Your learning experience may include additional instruction in:
- Academic reading and writing
- Speaking and presentation skills
- Listening and comprehension
- Academic vocabulary and communication
- Critical thinking
- Research and study skills
- North American academic culture and classroom expectations
The result is a personalized pathway that helps you become a more confident English speaker, a stronger college student, and a more prepared member of the New England College community.
Earn College Credit While Improving Your English
One of the key advantages of the New England College Pathways Program is that English development and degree progress can happen together.
Rather than putting your college education on hold while you improve your English, Pathways allows eligible F-1 students to begin earning college credits while receiving the English-language support they need.
Depending on your English proficiency and academic readiness, your course schedule can include a combination of English support, non-degree English coursework, electives, and degree-credit courses.
As your proficiency increases, the balance shifts toward college-level coursework, helping you move naturally toward full participation in your degree program.
Your Pathway Is Based on Your Ability
There is no single starting point for every Pathways student.
Your approved English proficiency assessment helps determine where you begin and what level of support you need. Students with developing English skills may begin with a more intensive English-focused schedule, while students with stronger proficiency can take more degree-credit coursework with targeted English support.
Level 1: Build Your Foundation
Students at the beginning stages of English development receive intensive language instruction focused on building the core skills needed for academic study.
With an intensive schedule of English instruction, students develop foundational reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills while preparing for the expectations of college-level learning.
Typical credit structure: Two degree credits plus 12 non-degree credits
Level 2: Strengthen English and Begin Expanding Your College Experience
As students develop greater English proficiency, they continue focused language instruction while beginning to incorporate additional college coursework.
Students at this level can combine English development with an elective course, giving them the opportunity to explore academic interests while continuing to strengthen the language skills necessary for success.
Typical credit structure: Four degree credits plus eight non-degree credits
Level 3: Transition Toward College-Level Study
Students with stronger English proficiency are ready to take a greater number of degree-credit courses while continuing to receive targeted English support.
English support courses are required at this stage to help students successfully manage the reading, writing, communication, and academic expectations of college coursework.
Typical credit range: 12–14 degree credits
Level 4: Focus on Academic Success
Students who demonstrate higher levels of English proficiency may be ready to focus primarily on degree coursework.
An ESOL orientation is recommended, while ongoing English-support courses are strongly encouraged to help students succeed academically and continue developing advanced communication skills.
Typical credit structure: Up to 18 degree-earning credits while continuing to strengthen English skills with writing courses if needed
More Than English: Prepare for College in the U.S.
Success in an American college classroom involves more than knowing English.
Pathways students learn how to navigate the academic environment, communicate effectively with professors and classmates, approach assignments and research, participate in discussions, and develop the independent study habits expected at a U.S. college.
Through the program, you can build the confidence and skills to:
- Participate more comfortably in college classes
- Write and communicate effectively in academic settings
- Understand U.S. classroom expectations
- Develop stronger study and time-management strategies
- Think critically and communicate your ideas
- Build relationships with professors and classmates
- Transition successfully into a degree program
